| The Flip Side of Rakeback In Online Poker |
 |
|
The flipside of rakeback is both good and bad, depending on how you look at it. The good thing about not getting rakeback is that you will be able to cash in on bonuses. Some sites will subtract bonuses from your net rake. This can cheapen your rakeback deal. The bad thing about not getting rakeback is: you won’t get any of your rake back. Pretty simple—and if you have a rakeback program that will include bonuses and tournament fees in your net rake, you'll be in good shape.
One of the first things you have to do when choosing a poker room is see how much rake the site shaves off of each pot. Some poker rooms can take an astronomical percentage of rake. In this case, applying for rakeback with an affiliate should be a given (or avoid the poker room entirely). If the site takes a small percentage out of the rake, rakeback may not be entirely necessary, especially if it interferes with a bonus program. By and large, you’re going to want to get some form of rakeback—usually in the 30 percent range. Make sure, though, that by getting back a third of the rake, you’re not jeopardizing any loyalty reward points or bonus offers.
As people become more familiar with rakeback many poker rooms are coming on board with rakeback programs. It wasn’t so long ago that even experienced poker players had not even heard about rakeback. The rake ensures the poker room will not go under due to shelling out big pots. Rake allows the poker sites to stay up and running. So do players. Poker sites need players, so they can afford to have a portion of their rake revenues go back to the players that are fueling their profits.
Poker rooms will get new sign-ups via rakeback affiliates. Affiliates will get a cut of the new player's rake as a referral fee. Players can then get a portion of that cut returned to them through the affiliate site. If you want to join a rake back, program, it's important that you sign up with online poker rooms through affiliates sites.
What this all comes down to is that it makes little sense to play online poker without receiving rakeback. Yes, you need to read the fine print and make sure rakeback is working to your advantage, but for the most part rakeback programs are useful and lucrative. The flipside to getting rakeback is paying the full rake. If you play several hours a day, the rake could amount to thousands of dollars. Most sane players will want to get back every dime they can. Rake is your table tax and rakeback offers are your table tax returns. Be sure to take advantage of these offers.
