If you're looking to quickly learn how to play Texas holdem, or have played before and need a quick brush-up before hopping over to a buddy's poker night, you've come to the right place. My part of the bargain is to keep it brief, yet informative. Your part is to win of course. Just to clarify, Texas holdem is the same game as holdem, and within the world of holdem, there are a few varieties: no-limit, pot-limit and limit holdem. We'll focus on the world's most popular poker game - the same one you see regularly on TV - Texas No-Limit Holdem.
Regardless of the amount of players at a table, the cards mean the same thing and the dealer will offer consistency every deal. The dealer begins by placing a dealer button one player to their left. This player will serve as if they were the dealer, and in a home game or any game without a dealer, the player holding the button will deal the cards. Before cards are dealt, two players will post blinds. Simply put, they are antes that are predetermined before the beginning of the hand. The first player to the left of the dealer button posts a small blind, and the next player to the left posts the large blind. When you play online Texas Holdem all this is of course done automatically.
Once the blinds have been posted, the dealer will begin dealing to the left of the dealer button. He will deal one card facedown to each player around the table, followed by a second card, facedown. These cards are known as the pocket, or hole cards, and will be the foundation of your hand. At this point, a round of betting will take place, beginning with the player to the left of the large blind. In order to stay in the game you must equal the highest bet on the table. It may be equal to the large blind, or potentially more if another player has decided to raise the bet. In the no-limit variety of holdem, the name isn't just a clever suggestion. You can quite literally put all your money on the table if you decide to do so. If you choose not to bet, you may fold/quit the hand by tossing your cards back to the dealer (the muck).
After the initial round of betting, the dealer will offer three cards face up on the table known as the flop. These are shared, or community cards, and all players will continue to build their hand using these cards. After the flop, another round of betting will take place beginning with the player left of the dealer button (or the first remaining player in the action). Once all bets are in and equal, the dealer will offer another community card known as the turn.
Another round of betting takes place after the turn, and again, once all bets are equal the dealer offers the final card to the remaining competitors, which is known as the river. Another round of betting follows and once the bets are equal, the remaining players will show their cards in the order they were playing. The player with the highest five-card hand, built from any of the seven available cards is declared the winner. The dealer button and blind posting rotates one player to the left and the action is repeated for another hand.
